OHIO Health Department spokesperson Laura Pajon told me the department has received a number of requests to change its name and that its current name is just “Health and Human Services”.
Pajon added that the department is currently in the process of looking into options for a new name, but that the name is the one the department and the public will recognize.
The department has an existing name of “Health Care” and its website lists a number that suggests it has two branches, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Office for Veterans’ Health Care.
Pajons spokesperson said that the new name will be used for the entire department, not just for OHIO.
Predicting the futureThe name change will not come without controversy.
Some of those who have complained about the name change are upset that the office of the chief medical examiner, the primary health care provider for the state, does not recognize OHIO’s official name.
The OHIO Secretary of State’s Office has said the department’s name change is necessary for the department to be recognized as a public health agency, and that the state’s current name of the OHIO Office of Veterans’ Affairs is too generic.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the office said the current name should be changed to reflect the department that provides health care services for the general public and the department will continue to maintain its name as it is.
However, Pajons spokesman said the name of OHIO will remain the same, despite the change.
“We’re working to make sure the name reflects our current mission and the health of the people of OHio,” she said.
